My fascination with music began at age 10. I was lured into music by songs like “The Monster Mash”, “Time” by the Chamber Brothers, and “Do You Know Your Way To San Jose” which is where I was born and raised. Then, seeing Peter Frampton “LIVE” at my first concert in the 70’s synched my curiosity and turned my fascination into a life long dream and desire. A passion for music that would take me on a focused musical journey for the rest of my earth lived days.
It all began when…
At age 12 I got my first guitar and was performing and touring with the BF Deal Band. We were getting local radio air-play, winning Battles-of-bands, and were recognized as one of the top local Bay Area original groups. During that period I played with Sam Andrew and Snooky Flowers from Janis Joplin and Pearl Heart from the Kozmic Blues Band. Also made appearances and sat in with popular local bands like Bad Habit, Tom Landry from KSJO, and May West from the Rock Gardens in San Jose. I then joined the Booth sister’s in the “Summit Road Band” managed by Chris Lewis.
Original Music and Accomplishments:
In the early 80’s I formed my own original group Rare Breed with Darcy Andersohn and worked the Hawaii circuit for about 3-4 years. Voted top guitarist on Oahu, I competed against artists’ like Marty Friedman from Megadeath. I also met other greats like Carlos Santana, Neal Schon, Vivian Campbell and Prairie Prince, to name a few. I received the 98Rock Guitarist award 2-years in a row and was honored to judge year 3. Rare Breed then relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area where Regent St. Claire of Castle Blak signed the group on Loud Mouth records.
Venues I’ve played include: The Omni in Oakland, The Chateau Liberte, The Saddle Rack, Hidden Valley Ranch, and many San Francisco clubs like The Old Waldorf, all the Keystones, The Mabuhay Gardens, The On Broadway and The Stone. We opened for great acts like Robin Trower, Blue Oyster Cult, Y&T, and Paul Gilbert from Racer X. These were some of the best years of my journey.
Make A Joyful Noise!!
Finding a more spiritual side and experiencing a deeper power and meaning of music led me to the church where I spent more than 10 years playing and leading worship in God’s house. During this time I recognized music was a gift to me, and I was merely an artist expressing and delivering gifts. I create the art for people’s listening pleasure which can also have the power to take them on a memorable journey and a unique experience that can result in a personal and even spiritual reward.
Music IS a powerful gift!
I’ve written a plethora of music and have been recording and performing since age 12. I’ve published more than 12 CD’s and 75 songs which can be found and heard here, and have a wonderful history of photos and memories located here. More recent projects include subbing on bass and guitar for Skynyn Lynyrd, recording in the studio with David Sikes from Boston, and competed in America’s Got Talent with family band, Armored Flight.
Over the years I realized that a world without music is unimaginable.
So I currently play guitar and sing for the Heartbeat Band, perform with my wife as a duet playing ukulele in a project called DebraLee Darling and Her BRAD HABIT, and I provide ukulele lessons at Rifftime.com where you’ll find other greats like Carlos Reyes, Jeff Watson and numerous others. I will play music the rest of my life and you’ll never catch me without a guitar pick in my pocket!
